Nearly all the stars visible in the sky are within 5,000 light years of us. Main-sequence stars have a lifespan on the order of billions of years, so the changes are excellent that the star is still there, and still able to grant your wish. Unless you were wishing on the Andromeda galaxy, which is 2.5 million light years away, in which case you're actually wishing on 400 billion stars, again, most of which are main-sequence stars and almost certainly still there. So chin up!

Sorry for being smartass but... If were late for only one million years the star need to be 946100000000000000000000 kilometres far... so, we dont even see it, so we cant wish upon it. And when we see a shooting star, its in the Earth's atmosphere, it got to be within 100 km from the ground what lead us to that we're only 0,0001 seconds late even it's in the border of atmospere. :)
